"Broken Plates", Magneta Lane

Magneta Lane hails from Toronto, Ontario and is made up of Lexi (vocals and guitar), Nadia (drums), and French (bass). They released their debut EP 'The Constant Lover' in 2004 and just came out with their first full length "Dancing With Daggers" last month. The new album is kind of darker and heavier than the EP but is still really catchy and has a lot of pounding drums, fuzzy guitars and Lexi's cool detached vocals.

I first heard about them when I saw their video for 'the constant lover' about a year ago. I bought the EP and have been a big fan ever since. I got to see them live a couple of months ago (they were awesome) and I'm going to see them again next week. Anyway, check them out! Hope you like it.

"Melo Do Tabaco", Bonde Do Role

So my getting off my ass and posting should be proof enough that this song is worth your time.  I haven't touched this place in months upon months, partly because I'm lazy and partly because I honestly haven't had that much to share.

But the game has changed, ladies and gentlemen.  Those of you who were around in June might remember my Diplo post.  The dude hasn't rested, setting up a new label and remixing the shit out of Gwen Stefani, Bloc Party, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among others.

The first act signed to Mad Decent is Bonde Do Role, a trio of kids from Curitiba, Brazil whose debut EP for "Melo Do Tabaco" was executive-produced by the man himself.  The whole idea of signing a few random Brazilian teenagers would be weird for anyone else, but it's par for the cross-cultural scope of what Diplo's up to these days.

I actually have meant to post this track for a few weeks now, since I've been listening to it nonstop.  Any band whose cultural touchstones are hair metal, '60s "oldies" pop, favela funk and Tone Loc is cool with me - and it all gets thrown together in a fashion that moves the body even as the brain screams "wtf!"  I can't wait to play this out.

But wait - there's more!

"Dança Da Ventoinha", Bonde Do Role

Bonde Do Role's formula seems to be chopping up whole pieces of a reasonably well-known pop song, throwing one of two or three ridiculous beats underneath and screaming as loud as they can on top.

This shit is the next level, though - the Darkness sample comes out of nowhere and makes this track, much like Night Watch (great movie, btw) conjure up a clash of sounds and (mental) images that have truly never been experienced before.  Thoroughly silly and thoroughly unforgettable.

BONUS: the video for "Melo Do Vitiligo", which involves lots of cows and AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long".

"Waiting for My Real Life to Begin", Colin Hay

Colin Hay first appeared in Men At Work, an Australian outfit that was around during the eighties. When they broke up, he went on to make a bunch of solo albums over a span of fourteen years.

I first heard Colin Hay's "I Just Don't Think I'll Get Over You" on the Garden State soundtrack, and to a lesser extent, in the movie. Starts playing after they bury her hamster in the backyard. I apologize to all people that haven't seen the movie if I've ruined some vital plot point. I assure you, the hamster did not play a significant part in the movie.

I didn't really get into Colin Hay until I bought season one of "Scrubs", the medical comedy Zach Braff headlined (and is still headlining in it's, I think, fourth season). When I bought the second season, Hay was prominently featured in the first episode with his song "Overkill", starring in a rather large cameo.

His music is a pretty mellowed out, acoustic affair. The kind of stuff that you put on when you want to have a Cameron Crowe-esque like "driving home while the camera captures a medium ranged shot of your face, lost in silent, glassy eyed reverie, as you ponder your recent falling out with the girl of your dreams who you secretly love, but can't tell because you're too afraid" moment. I've been told Orlando Bloom listens to this song while he sits in his room and silently cries because life is so beautiful.

Speaking of which, I'll throw in

"Beautiful World"

while I'm at it.

Hope this community speeds up to what it once was. You'd think with open posting access, this place would be a mad house.

"Wish You Well" / "Yesterday's Gone", Bernard Fanning

Bernard Fanning may be better known as the lead singer of the Australian band, Powderfinger, but he's gone solo for a short while and released Tea & Sympathy last year. I went to his concert last night in Sydney and he is nothing short of amazing. Apparently he was just a bit drunk, but drink makes everything better, doesn't it? A little bit rock, a little bit folk, a little bit country; he makes music that was just made for foot tapping and hand clapping. According to Last.FM he is "obscure" (but their stats are just a little dubious anyway) so I thought I'd rectify that a bit.

Wish You Well was his first single and it's upbeat and catchy, so I thought I'd be a nice introduction. Yesterday's Gone was his closing song at the concert if I remember correctly. A little bit slower, it's the perfect winding-down kind of song which therefore gets a big thumbs up from me.

Um, yay, a post. =\

"Surrender", Matchbook Romance

I've always wanted to be a member of this posting community. This place has opened my eyes to so many new, amazing bands, that I can't really even put into words how much coming here has benefitted my musical prowess. Hopefully I can give back to this community what it has given to me, and then some. Of course, I'm not on the cutting edge of music, but I make do with what I find and attempt to spread the love to all of my friends via AIM (despite whether they want that love or not).

Which is why I'm going to condemn myself to hell on my very first post. Yes, I'm posting a Matchbook Romance song. Why, you ask? Isn't this band another member of the throngs of sound-a-like poppy, punk, hardcore, emo, screamo, "my girlfriend dumped me, therefore, my life will not continue past this day" genre that some of us (maybe most of us) have grown to despise? Yes and no.

Sure, you'll find undertones of "my life sucks, I'm giving up". Hell, this song is called "Surrender", but I'm not posting it because I have the post Valentine mopes. Simply put, Matchbook Romance sounds a hell of alot like Muse now, and that's good enough for me. Which is why I'm going to post a Muse song along with this song, in hopes that I won't be castrated too badly.

I'm a fan of the "post apocalyptic" sounding, end of the world genre. In almost every single song on this album, there are under currents of malevolence and an ominous sensation of impending doom that one can only feel as they are being cast down into the fiery depths of Hades, replete with gold bullions to pay Chiron, ferrier of the river Styx.

Or something to that degree. I'm new to describing the music I'm listening to.

"Citizen Erased", Muse

Simply put, if you haven't heard of Muse by now, you've been living under an exceptionally large rock.

Charismatic, operatic, instru-...matic. Matt Bellamy's talent in everything musical is off the chart, a fact which can be validated by attending a live performance. But really, you don't need to be there in person to appreciate the amount of work that goes into every single song this band produces and records. One of the most unique sounds I've ever heard. That's probably why they're one of my most favorite bands.

"February", Dar Williams

This is not a theme post.
Why do I say this? Because one song cannot possibly have a theme! Okay, maybe. "February" is not only fitting for this month (here in the fine state of Michigan, we are freezing our toes off and I'm beginning to forget what flowers are myself), but it's a beautiful song in its own right.
I first heard this song around two years ago. How I heard it, I don't know, but it ended up on my iTunes and has been in the top most-played songs ever since. One of my most favorite songs, I would love to give an in-depth analysis of the techniques and styles and such of this song and artist, but it's 2AM, and I'm sick (thanks to the lovely weather I mentioned earlier,) this is my first post (I know, I know, not an excuse!) and I can't really concentrate.
So I'll leave you with this: it's a good song, instrumental-folky, and you should download it. End of story.

So here's the deal:

  • Our webspace is gone - long story short, keeping up that much copyrighted music for that long will get anyone's account suspended. Thanks to our gracious former host, Conor - it was good while it lasted.

  • No one's posted since December 11. I personally am one of the worst offenders; my last post was months ago.

The first problem is fixable - just use MegaUpload or RapidShare or YouSendIt or any of those other "temporary" hosting services with compound names, or find another gracious benefactor and remember to delete stuff a couple weeks after posting it.

The second is not so easily repaired. About a year ago, I created this community because I wanted to give myself and others the opportunity to share and write about music we loved. It served its purpose pretty well, but no amount of badgering, empty threats nor public outcry could keep us posting.

There were myriad problems that beset us: the posting template was admittedly arcane and difficult; several mods' school schedules interfered with their posting; many mods didn't want to write as much as I originally asked of them. Oh, and how the hell were we supposed to come up with that much new and interesting music and come up with something to say about it?

We were - are - no Fluxblog, but we had a pretty good run. I personally still love music, and writing about music - my last several posts make that apparent. I still believe in the idea of this community, but there's a lot that's got to change if we want to revive it.

And we can't revive it without a supportive audience. So, without further ado:

Area - The Futureheads

Fearing [info]anniversaire's awesome wrath, here is an update. Small, but existing! I have a big ol' final in a little over 12 hours, so my focus is on the wonders of cultural anthropology rather than hipster rawk. So, uhm, here's the new Futureheads song! A good way to come to the close of 2005, by remembering one of it's greatest achievements. The Futureheads are pretty god fucking damn awesome, as is this song. It is not from a new album (SHUCKS) but rather a wee EP which is probably damn near impossible to locate on these shores (which I haven't tried to do, but it's usually the case, so I assume...) which, I suppose, is perfectly acceptable to fill the gap between albums, which ideally won't be a long one. Watch the volume, as this appears to be much louder than my other MP3s. Anyways, the 'Heads are from Sunderland, which is near Newcastle, who make some damn good beer. They bear strikingly thick (and adorable!) accents, if you haven't noticed (or heard them before, which is not totally likely as they were the Next Big Thing! for a few weeks I think), which only make their "ANGULAR GANG OF FOUR INSPIRED" (find a British band of the past year that that awful phrase hasn't been applied to and I will buy you something special) happy fun mega rhythms more interesting. (Unless it's in comparison to the_in_sound favourites Maximo Park who pretty much sound the same accent-wise. And y'know, guitar wise, music wise... not to mention the album covers and the clothes. Hey, have we seen them in the same room yet?) Uhm so yeah, that's about all I can bring myself to say. I suppose it's quite a lot, actually. I have never abused parentheses like that before in my life...

I think one of the reasons my posts ... suddenly ended, was that I left my job at a purveyor of music discs. I return there shortly, so maybe I will get all up in this again. It was pretty fun while it lasted.
All the posters should come back and each do a snobby "BEST OF 2005!!!" thing, because they're easy and interesting! You know you've already done it in your head like 12 times already.

[ mood | busy ]

The end of the semester is here and I've been so incredibly busy. I'm still busy. This weekend I must complete two portfolios, a paper rewrite, and a major project. Ew. The last official day of classes is this upcoming Wednesday, but finals don't end until December 23rd. YUCK.

BUT I DON'T WANT THIS COMMUNITY TO DIE, MMKAY? KEEP IT MOVIN', FOLKS!

COME BACK, MEMBERS & MODS!

"Fashion," The Lovemakers

I know the Lovemakers/50 Cent mashup, "Shake That 50 Cent," was posted a while ago and that some of you guys loved it. I know I did. So when I saw the album "Times of Romance" at Housing Works Thrift Store (which also has some of the best thrifted records I've ever seen -- but I don't have a record player, I suggest you go if you live in Manhattan), I had to buy it. It's actually pretty good. Some songs are much catchier than others, but this track, "Fashion," is pretty great. FOR THE DISSENTERS: I thought it would be an awful Bowie cover, but it's not. Not a Bowie cover at all. (Thank God for small favors, no?)

"Be the One,"

"Mud Sticks," Little Barrie

Everybody could use a little extra British Rock, right? Little Barrie is a very cute blues-infused band from the United Kingdom. Their music is totally reminiscent of old classic rock bands. A very underdoggish band. I don't hear as many people raving about them as I should, dammit. Their latest album, "We Are Little Barrie," was produced by Edwyn Collins (as in "A Girl Like You," one of my favorite songs ever), so you know they're worthy. Srsly. Both of these tracks are from their 2005 EP.

"Strangest Places," Abra Moore

I was pretty much obsessed with Abra Moore when I was nine (her, the Spice Girls, and Fleetwood Mac). It made me sad when she just kind of vanished. Anyway, I was a pretty angsty nine year-old and I loved (er, love) her whiney, breathy, kind-of-pissed-off-but-not-really voice. I stumbled across this CD ("Strangest Places") while thrifting last weekend and I had to buy it. HAD TO. SENTIMENTALVALUEPEOPLE! Although I'm sure that more people are familiar with her grammy-nominated song "Four Leaf Clover" or movie-featured "Don't Feel Like Cryin'," this song still kicks very much underappreciated ass.

It's 3:00 a.m. I'm spending Thanksgiving with a my lovely Jewish friend and I'm voluntarily observing the sabbath, so I can't post on Saturday.

This post will be minimal because I have so much to do before I leave (like clean my room and pack), but I can't go away for the holidays without bidding you guys adieu.

All old stuff. DEAL WIT IT, SUCKAS.

"Can't Feel A Thing," Clearlake

Lately I've been listening to a lot of music from when I was very very young and I stumbled across this CD and was all "LIKE OMG." I'm so pleased that they're releasing their third studio album in January. Whoo. This track is from their second album "Cedars."

"White Russian Galaxy," The Crimea

This band is kind of grungy, kind of dreamy, kind of adfhohrohrohwr. Whatever. Just listen to the track. From the album "Tragedy Rocks."

Now comment with some sort of feedback and let me know what you guys take.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, FOLKS!

You Can See, Deerhoof

As Rolling Stone put it: "Is it juist us, or did some hipsters kidnap the purple Teletubby, drug him with some heavy shit and force him to front a killer power-pop band? Way to rock, Tinky Winky!" This is a song from their latest album, The Runners Four.

Bottle Rocket, The Go! Team

I actually know very little about this group, but my friend gave me a mix CD and this was a track on it. Enjoy it. The CD is called Thunder, Lightning, Strike.

Remember to COMMENT WITH WHAT YOU TAKE. Feedback on the tracks is also nice. I don't care if you like the songs or not but there's a nice way to say it if you don't enjoy them.

Wind Me Up, The Epoxies
Toys, The Epoxies

I cannot say enough good things about the Epoxies lately. I'm so incredibly tired right now, so here. Listen to Wind Me Up, which is incredibly fun, and then Toys, which is my favourite track on the cd. The Epoxies blend punk and synth-y new wave in the most perfect way that when the cd ends, I let it just replay. It's seriously that good. Plus her name is ROXY EPOXY. That's so cool! But really, but the cd. It's honestly worth it. The whole thing is just fun. It reminds me of being in the twin cities, driving around and trying to find the way from St. Thomas to the U and passing creepy huge Arby's more time than we should.

Also, Britney's Remix Cd IS SOOO GREAT.

Comment and tell me if you love Roxy Epoxy or NO. :)

Dance In My Blood, Men, Women & Children

So I personally get tons of adds from tons of shitty bands on MySpace. Sometimes, if I'm in a good mood, I'll add them back. (Sometimes it's purely based on the name.) Well, I guess I added these guys a while back. Saw a bulletin for a LP Version of one of their songs. Downloaded it. And here it is. Boogie in your chair.

I Want You to Want Me (Live from TRL) Lindsay Lohan

I shared Lindsay's first single, "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)" in my last post. And I just don't want the Linds to end there. I didn't watch this episode or anything, so I have no idea why she's covering this song. She does all right. I don't know if it's going to be on her new album (A Little More Personal (Raw)) which comes out December 6th. But anyways, I do enjoy my Lindsay.

WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

This community's too cool to die! Come on, I know people are busy, but really, LETS SEE SOME MORE POSTS! So I humbly offer up four songs for your listening pleasure; they're all quite different and unique and beautiful and lovely and I hope you enjoy them and, more importantly, if you enjoy them, I hope you feel compelled to buy their records and also I hope you TELL YOUR FRIENDS about these great songs and pass them on because MUSIC IS THE BEST and if people don't hear pure aural beauty, then how will they know?

Bleed In Breathe Out, Elliott

Very rarely do I say "(insert band here) SHOULD BE as big as Coldplay, Radiohead, (insert hyped-up but good band with some mainstream success)," because, well, that's just lazy. Besides, very rarely do those bands actually live up to the hype, nor do they really have a chance at being that successful. Elliott...is one of the rare exceptions to that rule. This band from Louisville, it could have been big. It should have been big. But...it wasn't. For those who heard their records, they know that the world missed an excellent opportunity. Song In The Air is still a brilliant record, even after all these years. Unfairly labeled "emo" because of their first few records, the band actually had a damn good sensibility for atmospheric rock, and their small but loyal fanbase loved them for it. Their breakup isn't surprising, though...it must be frustrating to make constantly good music, yet be ignored by the world at large. Especially when everyone who knows you know you have greatness in you. The band played their final show in 2003. But a few weeks ago the band released Photorecording, a CD/DVD document that details the last few months of Elliott's existence. After playing their last show, they went into the studio and recorded their setlist live to tape. That's what this release is, as well as odds and sods from the past few years."Bleed In Breathe Out" is but one jewel on this beautiful collection. There's so much more I could say, but I'll shut up and let the music do the talking.
But mourn for this band who is no longer with us, because their breakup was indeed a great loss.

Astray! Astray!, The City On Film

The City On Film is the "new" project of Hey Mercedes/Braid singer Bob Nanna. I say "new" because he's been doing it for years; he's used the name for small releases and compilation appearances, but with the breakup of Hey Mercedes, he's actually started to do more with this band. He released his first full-length album earlier this year, and a new EP, American Diary came out a few weeks ago. It's a bit more rocking than previous releases; here, he collaborated with members of Kind of Like Spitting and Minus the Bear, and the results sound great. This song "Astray! Astray!" kind of reminds me of Sebadoh, but only in the best possible way.

A Song Is Not The Song Of The World,Castanets

I saw the Castanets live a few months ago and it bored the heck out of me. It was just Ray Raposa and his beard, and it was not very interesting. Come on, there's only so many Jim James-meets-Eef Barzelay songs you can listen to in a row. Then he asked my friends The Weird Weeds to come onstage and back him up. It was an impromptu thing, one they weren't quite ready for, but they did quite well, and their beautiful drone fit quite nicely with his gentle singing. I wasn't that enthused about receiving First Light's Freeze, because his set was quite dull and I figured the music would be the same. Wrong! Yeah, there's a bit of that folkie thing going on here, but there's more to his music than that; it's hard to describe, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. I love this song in particular, though there are lots of good ones to be found.

Born For a Puropse/Reason For Living, Dr. Alimantado

I couldn't tell you much about Dr. Alimantado, other than his music was well-loved in England in the 1970s, and this song in pariticular was considered a beloved treasure in the British punk scene. Unlike the nihlism of that scene, this song is surprisingly and beautifully upbeat. It's a hopeful message, especially for those times when you're feeling down and out or stressed or confused about life, and it's one that I hope you'll enjoy. I know I've listened to this song every morning for a long time, and I'm sure you'll do the same.

Make sure and leave a comment if you take something! I wanna know what you think!

[ mood | okay ]

WELL, HELLO THERE.

Excuse my extended absence. College is making me all $)*@)#$#@*!@#!@#.

I would have posted yesterday, but my presence at the SPOON CONCERT (OMGZ) prevented me from doing so.

"Paralyzed,"

"Major Baby (Demo)," Mando Diao

The members of this [pretty studly] band are from Borlange, Sweden, forming after the band Butler broke up and Daniel Häglund and Björn Dixgärd were left blowin' in the breeze. Most of the tracks on this album were recorded in the band's basement rehearsal space. Just so you know, these songs are from "Bring 'Em In," but "Major Baby" is only found on the German release (if I'm not mistaken).

"Small Stakes," Spoon

Can we just take a moment to respect the beauty that is Britt Daniel?

OH MAH GAWD. That man is all kinds of pretty. (I got some lovely pictures at the concert as well.) This band from Austin, Texas has only two perma-members, Britt Daniel and Jim Eno. The other two fellas tend to interchange. "Small Stakes" is my favorite Spoon song ever and I peed myself a little when they played it for the encore last night.

"Be Gentle With Me," The Boy Least Likely To

This English band can only be described as "pleasant." Kind of soft, kind of folky, this band presented an excellent debut with "The Best Party Ever," which seems like an odd title choice since the tracks don't exactly make one shake it fast. Interesting sidenote: some of the songs on this album (I think "Paper Cuts" and "Hugging My Grudge" are two of them) were recorded on an eight-track machine in their back bedroom.

Sorry this post is fairly crap but I literally have about ten minutes to do this entire thing…Having said that, I hope you enjoy these past blasts…I was too lame and embarrassed to admit I liked these songs when they were popular, but now I blare them through my pov speakers proudly!

Steal My Sunshine - Len

You’ll remember this catchy song from Len’s 1999 (one hit wonder?) release "You Can’t Stop The Bum Rush". Any album called you can’t stop the bum rush is in my opinion, great. Such linguistic talent. They’re Canadian, enough said! (I kid, I kid). There very little info about Len on the internet, so all I’m going to say is…When my older sister bought the single “steal my sunshine” I was 13, and I would strut around in my TOOL t-shirts and openly mock her but when she would go out, I’d steal the cd and listen to it with my earphones on whilst dancing around my room (same with MmmBop actually). The other day I told her on msn that I’d re-discovered it and she ridiculed me. I deserved that.

Accidently Kelly Street - Frente

I can’t believe this song (from “Marvin the Album”) came out in 1994! I remember singing along with this song (along with “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch”) in the back seat of the car when I was a kid! Now I’m getting all nostalgic. OK, is there anyone who has never heard this song? I find that hard to believe, ‘cause it’s The Catchiest Song Ever. So darn catchy that you won’t be able to clear your head for days! Frente, from Melbourne, were headed by Angie Hart and her adorable voice enticed the masses. Or…annoyed the masses. A bit of both I think. Sadly, they broke up in 1998 but now Angie’s in a new band called ‘Splendid’.

Mmmbop - Hanson

Sorry. I had to do it. You know you love it!
